January is the time to start your garden in zone 8. To be ready for the last frost you should start all transplants inside in January so you're ready to go. January is your first window to start your indoor sowings and order your seeds for the spring season. The next two months are the most important for starting your vegetables on time. Start your tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables to be ready for spring transplant!

The Wisconsin Lakes Pepper is a beautiful heirloom bell pepper with a bright red flesh. This pepper variety is an early maturing bell pepper that turns from green to red. This pepper is a great choice for Northern gardeners. Wisconsin Lakes was bred by Wisconsin University in the1960s and it produce a good reliable harvest of early bell peppers.

The Yellow Scotch Bonnet, aka the Jamaican, produces an abundance of little yellow peppers with an extremely hot flavor! Some say that this pepper's flavorful taste is rivaling that of many Habanero's. This hot variety has an excellent flavor making them popular for hot sauces. The Yellow Scotch Bonnet produces well-yielding, compact plants.

Fragaria virginiana, commonly known as the Virginia or Wild Strawberry, is a native North American species that played a key role in the history of cultivated strawberries, having been crossed with the Chilean strawberry (F. chiloensis) in the 18th century to produce the modern garden strawberry. These plants spread by runners and form low mats, producing small, deep red berries that are celebrated for their intense sweetness and concentrated, classic strawberry aroma. While smaller than commercial varieties, the fruit packs a rich, complex flavor that many describe as more “wild” and satisfying. Adaptable and resilient, F. virginiana thrives in fields, forest edges, and meadows, with attractive trifoliate leaves, delicate white flowers, and a long tradition of use by both wildlife and people.

This is a popular variety with many heirloom growers, as Deer Tongue has been an Amish favorite for decades!

These tomatoes have a sweet and juicy flavor that will have you growing them for years and years to come! The Orange Oxheart weighs around 16-32 ounces and is just perfect looking!

The Black Sea Man Tomato is a fantastic tasting Russian heirloom that has a wonderful rich flavor when added to different dishes. This tomato variety is a small plant that produces good yields of medium-sized brownish-pink fruits that have a beautiful olive green shading. The Black Sea Man has a beautiful marbled flesh that gets even more attractive when blanched and peeled.

The Anna Russian Tomato is a delicious and beautiful heirloom oxheart-shaped tomato that was brought over from a Russian immigrant in the 1980's. This large tomato variety is early maturing for an oxheart variety. The beautiful pink-red fleshed Anna Russian can weigh up to 1 pound. This superb old-fashioned tomato gives off rich tomatoey flavors with lots of juice.
