How to Grow Tobacco

A tall growing Hungarian variety that reaches 6-7 feet in height. Leaves are long and narrow and ripen in 65-70 days. Plant closely resembles Orinoco.

Goose Creek Red is named after a small river that runs into the Charleston Harbor. This dark Virginian type tobacco air cures to a deep reddish brown color and makes an excellent pipe or full flavored cigarette blend. It has a silky feel, making it ideal as a wrapper for cigars. Grows to about 6 feet in height and matures in 65 days.

Samsun tobaccos originated in the Samsun region of Turkey near the Black Sea. Samsun Maden is a sub strain of the original Samsun with a lighter colored leaf and milder flavor. The plant has columnar shape with the characteristic heart-shaped leaf with a fringed petiole. It reaches an height of 6 feet with 22-28 leaves averaging 12 to 15 inches in width and 16 to 18 inches in length. It reaches maturity in 50-55 days, ripens early and is usually sun cured. It makes a good stand alone cigarette, and is very good for cigarette and pipe blends.

A bright leaf variety that was imported by the USDA from Columbia in 1967. A tall grower that reaches a height of 5-6'. Leaves grow close together with inverted cones. Produces a sweet mild flavor with a slightly nutty taste, and is an excellent cigarette or pipe tobacco. It can be used in a blend, or on its own. Costello has a nicotine content at 2.4%. The leaves air cure to a light brown to a dark reddish brown.

One Sucker is a dark air cured heirloom tobacco. It grows 4-5' in height with dark green leaves. Long leaves that can reach upwards of 3'. It produces 15-16 leaves on average, frost resistance and excellent wind resistance.

Shargo originated in eastern Europe and is a hybrid cross between a white stemmed Burley and a Turkish strain. It has the vigorous growth and high production of a white stemmed Burley and yellows in the field as it reaches flowering and maturity at about 70 days. It has a spicy flavor more like many Turkish strains. It can be cut and hung whole or primed and strung to cure and dry. The plants grow to 7-8 feet in height to the bloom producing 16-20 leaves ranging from 13-17 inches in width and 24-28 inches in length. Shargo's unique flavor, heavy production, and early ripening and ease of curing, make it an excellent choice for new and experienced growers alike.

An heirloom tobacco that originates from Maryland. A high yielding crop with sharp pointed leaves. Catterton will grow to over 30" tall and 16" wide when mature. Air cures easily to a rich reddish brown color. A medium flavored smoke which is excellent for cigarettes alone, or as a blend. Also used in cigars and pipe tobaccos.

A hardy dark Virginian tobacco that grows fast, with long, thick, narrow leaves. The leaves turn under at the tips giving it a horn like shape. It has a rich, full flavor and is good for cigarettes, pipes and cigars. Stag Horn grows up to 6 feet in height and matures in about 65 days. The leaves air cure to a deep reddish brown.

Vesta 64 is a well developed bright leaf Virginian type tobacco that grows up to 4 1/2 to 5 feet in height to the crows foot. The plant produces from 18 to 20 leaves on average that measure 20 to 26 inches in length and 10 to 12 inches wide. It reaches maturity in 55-60 days. The leaf air cures to a light golden brown, or flu cures to a bright yellow. It is a vigorous grower and is a black shank resistant.

Most commonly used as a cigar binder but may be used as a filler or pipe tobacco blend or in cigarettes. It produces large leaves, has a tight upright columnar form.

L'Assomption 201 is a cigar filler variety developed in Canada, at the L'Assomption Experimental Station during the 1930s. It is useful for as a cigar wrapper, binder and filler. The plant reaches a height of 4 1/2 to 5' at the crows foot and produces an average of 18 leaves. It reaches maturity in 50-55 days. It can be primed or stalk-cut or stalk-cured and air-cures easily to a deep, medium brown.

Harrow Velvet is a medium flavored Burley with excellent curability and a short aging time. It has a columnar plant form with tightly spaced leaves which are very uniform in size. Almost no suckering. Leaves grow to 24" inches long by 14" wide when mature. Will go from green to golden yellow when fully mature. Leaf cures to a medium buckskin brown. An excellent plant for priming or to cut and hang whole. Very good wind resistance.

PY KY 171 is a pale yellow breeding line that is agronomically comparable to KY 171. It is a dark fire-cured tobacco with high resistance to black root rot, wildfire, and TMV. The plants grow to a height of 5-6 feet to the flower and produce from 14 to 17 leaves per plant. The leaves grow in a semi- erect position, averaging 11-13 inches in width and 24-30 inches in length with good overall yields. Maturity is in 60-65 days. The leaves turn yellow about 4 weeks after topping, whereas, KY 171 stays green making the "PY" strain easier to color cure. Nicotine level by dry weight 5.31% compared to 4.70% for KY 171.

Papante is a primitive variety that likely comes from southeastern area of the Mexican state of Sonora. A specimen is on display at the Conservation Center in Tucson, AZ. The plant's general appearance resembles that of both Little Dutch and Mountain Pima, though the leaf is a much darker green. It has been incorrectly listed and sold as Nicotiana rustica. Air-cures to a soft, light brown. Useful for cigarette, pipe blending and cigar filler. It’s relatively square secondary vein angle allows it to be used for cigar wrapper or binder. Yellow Orinoco is an heirloom bright leaf which originated from the Virginian Orinoco's. It grows to 5' producing an average of 16 leaves per plant below the crows foot. It matures early at 55 days. Suckering is low, and is less than with White Stemmed or Frog Eye Orinoco. Leaves are light to medium green and average 12" to 14" wide and 24" to 26" long, with yields of 3 oz of dried leaf per plant. Leaves air cure to a light brown.

Fast growing, early maturing tobacco plant. Matures to about 4-5 feet in height and has thick, waxy, dark green leaves.

Japan 8 is a very sweet dark oriental tobacco with low nicotine content. It is a compact plant reaching 6' in height with long narrow leaves. The leaves average 8" wide and 24" long. Plants average 28 harvestable leaves. It can be air cures or sun cured. It is excellent as a blend for cigarettes or pipes. Air cured leaves are a deep brown and produce a mild smoke with a licorice like flavor.

Virginia 15 is a light, aromatic cigarette and pipe tobacco. The plant grows to an average of 5' in height producing 22 leaves per plant. Leaves average 14" wide and up to 20" to 22" in length. It is a low nicotine variety with dried leaf averaging 0.95%. It is resistant to most diseases. Virginia 15 is a late maturing variety reaching bloom at 90-95 days.
